About Alpine, California
Alpine
is a peaceful rural community that lies at the foothills of the Viejas
Mountains. This friendly village borders the Cleveland National Forest
and is only a 20 minute drive east to the mountain recreation areas of
the Cuyamaca State Park and the Laguna Mountains.
Alpine has one of the
lowest crime rates and one of the best school districts. It is
recognized as the Nation’s First Wildlife Habitat by the National
Wildlife Federation. Over 100 gardens are registered Backyard Wildlife
Habitats.
Alpine is also home of the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians and their
The Viejas Casino and Turf Club and Viejas Factory Outlet Center. The
Viejas Casino is a premier Indian bingo and gaming center. Entertainment
at the casino includes their Concerts in the Park that seat 1500 people
per show.
The Alpine Community Center provides programs for families and
seniors. Many community activities are held in the Center’s Park -
including Alpine Summer Concerts, Alpine Viejas Days and other service
club special events.
Alpine is also home to the Descanso, Alpine and Pacific Railroad. This
is an incredible attraction with an amazing story behind it. Meet Roy
Athey, your conductor as he takes you on a ride in his backyard on an
actual real scale train. With the help of some good friends he rebuilt
the tracks, many of them of historical reverence, and on Sunday
afternoons he’ll treat his guests to a fascinating adventure. Rides are
free but please keep in mind that he built this out of the love of
trains, educating us on rail history and showing us a good time.
The main annual events of Alpine include the Sage and Songbird
Festival in May, Alpine Viejas Western Days and Parade in September, and
the Alpine Village Christmas Light Parade held on the last Saturday in
November.
