About Carlsbad
Carlsbad is known as ‘The Village by the Sea’. Luxurious accommodations, golf and even internationally renown attractions make this the ultimate coastal getaway. Carlsbad is less than 45 miles from downtown San Diego.

For centuries the Luiseno Indians lived on the shores of the coastal lagoons. Recently, a 4 inch volcanic rock chipped into the shape of a bear was found near one of the lagoons. According to carbon dating the rock was more than 8000 years old, and this amulet has now been designated an official state prehistoric amulet. In 1979, an expedition of Spanish explorers led by Don Gaspar de Portola was heading into Alta California to claim land for the King of Spain. It has been recorded that they stopped for a rest at a lagoon. Being downwind from an Indian Village garbage pile, they christened the lagoon Agua Hedionda (Stinking Water)! Luckily we don’t have to smell that now!

In 1887, The Arizona Eastern Railway built the Carlsbad Depot. The Depot acted as a telegraph office, Post Office, Wells Fargo Express Office a general store. In 1905 it was purchased by the Atchison, Topeka and Sante Fe Railroad and was used as a shipping point for locally grown fruit, vegetables and flowers. Upon its closure in 1960, the Depot was deeded to the city and it now serves as a Tourist Information Center. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Carlsbad borrowed it’s name from a popular spa in Bohemia (Czech Republic). In the 1880s a retired sea captain, John Frazier, struck mineral water when he was drilling for water at his homestead. Tests have proven the water to have some of the same mineral properties as the water in Karlsbad, Bohemia - thus the name. After 3 years, John sold his well to Gerhard Schutte who in turn established the California Land and Mineral Water Company. His spacious mansion, built in 1887, was later known as one of the Carlsbad Twin Inns. It is now Neimans Restaurant. The site of the original well is at the Alt Karlsbad Hanse House on Carlsbad Blvd. The city has grown from a population of 300 at the beginning of the 1900s to 73, 000 residents today.

Carlsbad is blessed with three picturesque lagoons, each with distinctive ecosystems. The lagoons are tranquil and unspoiled, providing safe haven for a wide variety of wildlife. The lagoons are ideal for nature walks and birding. The Batiquitos Lagoon is one of the few remaining tidal wetlands on the California coast.
