More Than Petticoats by Jan CleereMore Than Petticoats -
Remarkable Nevada Women

written by Jan Cleere, reviewed by Nancy J. Reid

More Than Petticoats - Remarkable Nevada Women, is a testimonial to the bravery, endurance and perseverance of some of our Nevada women from days gone by.

Jan Cleere writes in a pleasant but concise manner, giving you all the details and facts you need, to feel that you know the women she has picked for this book. The book covers Alison Oram Bowers; Ferminia Sarras; Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins; Dat So La Lee; Helen Jane Wiser Stewart; Idah Meacham Strobridge, Eliza Cook; the Daughters of Charity; Josephine Reed Pearl; Anne Henrietta Martin; Ah Cum Kee; Maude Frazier; and Felice Cohn. This selection of women range from miners to educators and from politicians and physicians to ranchers and basket weavers.

As you read each woman comes alive and their strength of purpose and determination to change things for the better stands out. They truly are a remarkable bunch, staunch and pioneering but most of all, extremely independent. Nevadans can be proud of the contributions each of these women have made to their state, and of Jan Cleere's talent and ability to research and present each one as a person unto themselves, but a force to be reckoned with when brought together in such a volume.

Our Mission: "Free Spirit Promotions (publisher of Big Blend Magazine) is a company based on the belief that education is the most formidable weapon that can be waged against fear, ignorance and prejudice. It is our belief that education starts at home and branches outward. Education leads to travel, and travel leads to understanding, tolerance, and appreciation of cultures and customs different to our own, and ultimately to world peace. Our company is further based on the principle that networking, communication, and helping others to promote and market themselves leads to financial stability; thus paving the way to better education, travel, and the spirit of giving back to the community."
