Equine Voices
Rescue & Sanctuary

Equine Voices Rescue & Sanctuary is a non-profit organization dedicated to saving Premarin mares and foals from slaughter. They focus on educating the public about the lives these unfortunate horses live in hopes that the public will help stop the cruelty. They also provide homes to horses.

the cruelties of PremarinPremarin is a hormone replacement therapy drug taken by millions of women. Recently it has come to light that this drug causes blood clots, ovarian cancer, diabetes, dementia and other medical problems. Even though the production of Premarin by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals has now been reduced by 50%, there are 20,000 stallions, mares and foals needing a home. Unless homes can be found for these horses, they end up being slaughtered. For those still "working", they live in cramped stalls which do not allow room for them to ever lie down, they do not have free access to water, and they are forced to stand up for as long as 6 months with rubber cups attached to their urethras to collect the urine from which Premarin is made. The mares are impregnated over and over again, as Premarin must be collected from pregnant mares.  When a mare is no longer useful, they are auctioned and usually slaughtered. Foals are considered a byproduct and also auctioned off and usually slaughtered.

the cruelties of Premarinthe cruelties of PremarinIt is amazing that such horrible cruelty is allowed to exist in our country, and that drugs like Premarin that cause serious medical problems are allowed to be manufactured and prescribed to unsuspecting patients. There are alternative therapies, so women now using Premarin should ask their doctors about them.

One has to wonder what use the Federal Drug Administration is, since drugs that are dangerous are allowed to be marketed before the proper medical testing is done--and even once it has been medically proven to be a cancer causing drug the manufacturing, selling and prescribing is allowed to continue. One also has to wonder about our laws when it comes to how we treat our animals. "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated".. Mahatma Ghandi.
So where does that leave our country?
