When I was young, Mom said “stand up straight” As I slumped in the chair she told me to sit up straight, as I lazed on the couch she reminded me to sit up and square my shoulders. Well, Mom was right. As I grow older I realize it more every day. Bad posture may cause poor digestion, or contribute to chronic back trouble or some other malady. And, fashion wise we don’t present ourselves in the best light when we slouch. No matter how expensive our clothes, they don’t look smart when we slouch. My Mom is now 82 years old and, having heeded her own advice, has terrific posture. In fact, one of her neighbors mentions her great carriage to me each time she comes in my shop. When Mom enters a room heads turn because she has a presence. She holds her head high and walks tall. She has a pleasant look on her face and seems relaxed and in control. Poised is the word that comes to mind. Her sense of style is impeccable. She mixes basic pieces of clothing with a few accessories, to create a wardrobe appearing to be much more extensive and expensive than it is. Adding a scarf, pin, or necklace gives her clothes a special oomph. Being an artistic type she coordinates colors to flatter her skin tones, nothing gaudy, just simply elegant. Mother Nature is not kind as we age and most of us develop big tummies. My Mom has not escaped this eventuality, but she has learned the art of camouflage. She wears: over blouses that skim her body; well fitting pants without pleats with legs that are neither too wide or too narrow; oblong scarves around her neck and tied in front allowing the ends to fall free covering the tummy. Yes, she does wear horizontal stripes, but when the shirts fit well and don’t tug around the mid section, there is no emphasis on the tummy. And, good posture plays an important part in this camouflage.
