The Potluck Survival
Guide -
Care and Feeding of
the
Athletic Supporter
written by Cherie Kimmons and reviewed by
editor, Nancy J. Reid
Well, this book is really a treat. Humorous, well
written and absolutely invaluable to anyone that entertains kids,
crowds, sports fans and more. I love that this book provides you with
tips on planning menus, feeding kids, feeding athletes both before a
game and after, planning buffets, and then gives you recipes too! Along
with that comes a section that will help the novice cook--no need to go
get another cookbook to tell you how to do something you have a sneaky
suspicion everyone else knows--like how to boil an egg. It's all
here--even down to how to decorate, calculate quantities and pick
ingredients. Each of the recipes has a side note that gives you ideas
and lets you do a bit of your own experimentation. the side notes also
steer you away from commonly made mistakes--I need that.

Cherie brings out very important planning points--how
to balance meal colors, weights, flavors and cooking techniques. She
also reminds us to take a look at who we are cooking for--children
versus adults, and to be conscious of foods that can cause possible
allergic reactions. When feeding athletes, Cherie points out the
difference between pre-game and post-game food choices. Nervous stomachs
and coaches all need to be figured in to turn out a successful,
appreciated meal.
Setting up a buffet is always nerve-wracking.
However, after reading Cherie's tips, it doesn't seem hard and it
certainly seems easier that a sit down meal. There is a handy section
that helps you calculate how much food you will need that I find very
helpful. I especially like her section on setting of "build-your-own"
food bars--that's definitely more my style. Go have fun, build-your-own,
while I sit back with a glass of wine and watch. |
