Talavera Pottery,
a new form of Ceramics
contributed by Ramshead Gift Store,
What happens when different
cultures converge into and art form? One good example is Telavera (Talavera)
pottery or earthenware. With influences from Asia and Italy that
filtered through to Spain, Portugal and then to the Americas. This
useful form of pottery is a delightful addition to any home or
collection. (Please click on photo to enlarge.)
Lustrous glazes combined with brilliant colors and the marriage of Italian techniques and Asian/Islamic patterns have made this ceramic art form a classic that has stood the test of time. Introduced to the Spanish in the the early 15th century, it has always been in a class of it's own--even considered a new form of ceramics.
Useful objects such as bowls, pitchers, jugs, plates and tiles decorated with intricate patterns found their way into home of the aristocrats as objects of art, as well as into the common peoples homes where they were used everyday. Italy became the center of production of these high quality ceramics.
If you are looking to brighten a spot in any room, this form of pottery is a great choice. You can choose from a myriad of colors, forms and motifs. No matter what you choose, you will find yourself, and others, will be drawn to the ceramic.
