Discover
Nevada!

Commission on Tourism
Remote and desolate, it took the most determined and
tough to explore and settle in this inhospitable, arid desert land. Yet, Nevada
(Spanish for snow-capped) is the most mountainous state in the country--having
314 mountain ranges and Lake Tahoe, the largest alpine lake on the North
American continent.
It is comprised of five regions. The Las
Vegas Territory, including Las Vegas, Boulder City, Laughlin, Primm & Jean as
well as Lake Mead; the Valley Of Fire and the 12,000 foot tall Mount Charleston.
The Pioneer Territory offers ghost towns, mining camps, picturesque golf
courses, the Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park and is a mecca for those searching
out UFOs. The Reno-Tahoe region, encompasses Lake Tahoe, the new Truckee River
Whitewater Park and kayak course, Virginia City--still clinging to the late
1800s with plank sidewalks and old store fronts-- and Pyramid Lake. Cowboy
Country is still alive with cowboys, sheepherders, miners and home to the
Jarbidge Wilderness Area and Ruby Mountains. The Pony Express region boasts the
Great Basin National Park, Wheeler Peak and the Lehman Caves. Here you can visit
the Ghost Train of Old Ely and the Grimes Point Archeological Site.
Culture & History: With it’s bonanza of gold, silver, and copper
mining, came the influx of gamblers, hardy ranchers and farmers, determined to
carve out a living in this vast amount of land. Towns sprang up then
disappeared. Immigrants came through, tried their hand at mining--some with
success like the two Irish men that discovered the famous Comstock Lode--some
moving on to California. Basque shepherds co-existed with cattle barons; cowboys
with Native Americans. Kit Carson, Jedediah Smith, Mark Twain and others of
tough resolve--along with liberal divorce, gambling, prostitution laws; miles of
open space; the hopes of prospectors and immigrants--is the cornerstone of the
independent spirit of the Nevada of today.
Entertainment & Shopping: Las
Vegas has been called the epicenter of great and exciting entertainment the
world over. Imagination, creativity, color, song, dance, pyrotechnics--it has it
all. In the 1800s during Virginia City’s heyday, Piper’s Opera House presented
some of the world’s biggest names in entertainment--from Lily Langtree to John
Phillips Sousa, to a packed house. Nevada’s live entertainment industry is the
best and it has become a hallmark of Nevada to supply it, not only in Vegas, but
in Laughlin, Reno and wherever possible--you’ll get a full spectrum from small
to large productions, from historic to bawdy, classical to pop and rock. Casinos
are everywhere, not just on the famed Strip, or the Fremont Street Experience
downtown. Whatever you are looking for--you are likely to find it in Nevada.
From mega-malls, the Forum Shops, The Venetian Shops and the Fashion Show
Mall--to the small boutiques, offbeat and specialty shops--Nevada is a mecca for
the shopper; especially in Vegas.
Food & Wine: From casino buffets to restaurants run by some of the
most well known chefs, you’ll dine fine in Nevada. There is the family style
dining of the Basque restaurants, elegant 5-star bistros, restaurants
overlooking Lake Tahoe--all offering world class menus.
Nature & Adventure: Hiking, biking, horseback riding, cycling,
dune jumping and sandboarding, snow and water skiing, scuba diving, paragliding,
hang gliding, rock climbing, kayaking, hot air ballooning and more awaits the
Nevada visitor. Visit Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area full of
geological wonders; enjoy the water fun at Lake Mead; explore the Colorado
River; fish in Walker Lake; see the natural wonders at the Great Basin National
Park and more.
Sports: Along with all major sports, Nevada caters to golfers in
almost every community--the state having hundreds of courses.
