The
"L" Word
Lisa Marie Platske, CEO of Upside Thinking, Inc.
John Maxwell's defines leadership as "influence...nothing more,
nothing less". In organizations big and small, non-profits, and
entrepreneurial ventures, people follow the person first, and
then their plan.
The definition doesn't
differentiate how the individual uses his/her influence but that
they have influence at all.
Yesterday, I
opened the paper to a headline of "Road to Recovery?" with the
media challenging Obama to use his influence and make a
difference. Leadership is a blend of many qualities and the
trick is to develop the winning combination of characteristics
that increase your sphere of influence. Whether you agree with
Obama's policies or not, the majority of American's believed he
had the qualities to effect change in the country.
Kouses and
Posner's research consistently demonstrates four characteristics
that every leader possesses. And, I believe that the element
that differentiates an extraordinary leader from one who simply
gets the job done is Love. As I said last month, love and fear
are the most powerful emotions known to mankind. They both emit
energy and whether you realize it or not, every word you say,
every decision you make is either made out of love or fear.
Extraordinary leaders know that love trumps fear every time.
So, how can you learn to lead with the "L" word?
-
Discern your top 10 values. Are words like service,
love, and kindness on your list? Remember, not all
values are created equal.
-
Choose
to be kind before choosing to be right. Need I say more?
-
Understand that how something gets accomplished is as
important as what gets done. The ends never justify the
means.
-
Ask
others whether your brand has value. Whether you
envision yourself on the catwalk or not, you are always
on camera creating a signature style. What is yours
worth?
May you experience the unlimited
possibilities and joy that come from choosing Love!
