Located in the
valley of a small tributary of the Rio Grande, Taos Pueblo has homes
and ceremonial buildings which represent a culture largely derived
from the traditions of the pre-historic Anasazi Indian tribes.
Pueblo de Taos is thought to have appeared before 1400 and is the
best preserved of the pueblos. |

About Taos, New Mexico
Taos is located in
northern New Mexico next to the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range, and
sits at 6590 feet above sea level. The area has an annual average of
12 inches of rainfall, and an annual average of 35 inches of snow in the
town area, with 321 average inches of snow in the higher elevations
[9200 feet ASL] per year. With it’s semi-arid climate, and boasting over
70% of sunshine a year, Taos offers a multitude of activities.
In 1540 Captain
Alvarado was sent by Spain to lead the first Spanish expedition
[Coronado Exp.] into the region, and by 1598, Dan Juan de Oate
officially colonized the area for Spain. After over 250 years of various
conflicts between the Indians, Spanish, and white settlers, the Treaty
of Guadalupe was signed, ending the Mexican-American War in 1848. By
1850, the United States designated the area, including Taos, as the
Territory of New Mexico. In 1912, New Mexico became the 47th state. At
present, there are over 50 restaurants and many lodgings offered, taking
very good care of the tourist enjoying all the outdoor and cultural
activities Taos offers.
