About Virginia City, NV
Located within
Storey County, Virginia City is home to a population of only 1000,
and sits at an elevation of 6200 feet above sea level. This quaint
mining town is conveniently located just a few hours from Lake
Tahoe, just 23 miles from Reno, and 15 miles from the state capitol
- Carson City, Nevada.
One of the largest
Historical Landmarks, Virginia City was established in 1861,
following the Great California gold rush. Both gold and primarily
silver were discovered in Virginia City, making it one of the
richest mining towns in the world. In fact, the mines of the
Comstock Lode yielded more than $400 million in gold and silver
which is said to have funded the Union Army during the Civil War and
helped to build the city of San Francisco. The most important stop
between Denver and San Francisco, this mining town’s population
rapidly grew to over 25,000. Mark Twain started his writing career
in Virginia City working as a reporter for the Territorial
Enterprise.
Portraying the historic mining industry it once had, today Virginia
City keeps its heyday alive boasting wooden sidewalks, restored
mansions, mine tours, "Old West" saloons and the Piper Opera House.
There is also a historic walking tour to follow. Virginia City has
also become a fun and educational family destination that offers a
glimpse into Nevada’s rich mining heritage with interactive tours
such as the Virginia & Truckee Railroad tours, Virginia Trolley
tours, museums, and more. In the spirit of the old west, the area is
also known for its wild horses that roam the Virginia Range.
