Annual Galaxy of
Glass Show
Popular Annual Glass Show in Fallbrook moves to another
level with a focus on Large-Scale Works
The Fallbrook Art Center is proud to present their 11th
Annual Glass Show. Showcasing a broad spectrum of hand-made
glass from artists and artisans across the region, works for
sale include sculpture, vessels, jewelry, lamps,
paperweights, perfumers, and functional ware, created using
a myriad of processes including blown, torched, slumped,
fused and cast.
Featured Family - The Everett’s – Hot Blown & Sculpted Glass
Works:
This
talented family owns Fallbrook Propane Gas Company and has
been a major sponsor of the show since its inception. In
fact, Merrill Everett is the originator of the show. “This
is the eleventh show we have sponsored – it is good to give
back to the community.”
Merrill
has been an artist most of his life, working in ceramics and
glass. With a Masters of Fine Art from Claremont Graduate
School, Merrill taught glassblowing at Orange Coast College.
“We always had a studio in our home too. We would have
Friday night get-togethers where Chris and his friends would
blow glass and do ceramics – it was a lot of fun.”
Chris
Everett has been blowing glass since he was about fourteen
and recently visited the island of Murano in Italy, where
glassblowing was born - they have been glassblowing since
about 1291.
This year,
we welcome eight new artists to the show including:
Kathleen Mitchell:
Kathleen began working in glass in 1981 and is currently an
instructor of both glassblowing and lampworking at UCSD
Crafts Center in La Jolla. “I made things, I always have.
I love the act of blowing glass, the sheer physical aspect,
the sweat, the dance, the communion with your partner. It’s
earthy and its difficult.”
George
Jercich: George is a professor of art at Cal
Poly, San Luis Obispo. Jercich has traveled and exhibited
extensively in the USA and abroad in such places as Germany,
the Czech Republic, and most recently in Southeast
Asia/Thailand.
“My
passion as an artist is to work 3-dimensionally. I prefer
mixed media including blown, fused, cast glass and welded
metal. Blown glass is however, one of the most challenging
and rewarding materials to experience as a craft. The
ability of glass to take form and color is enhanced by its
surface qualities and transparency. I try not to favor one
technique or style over another but use many different ones
to achieve an overall three dimensional sculptural result.
Currently, my work is thematic of the lore of the sea and
seafarers. I like to think of each piece of glass and mixed
media sculpture as an experience similar to a voyage.”
Rob
Morey: Rob Morey comes from a background of
sculpture in stone, wood and bronze. His early art career
led him to teaching where a former student showed him some
fused glass jewelry shd had made and he ‘was hooked’. He
left teaching to pursue a career in glass in 2000. “My
designs are mostly about nature. I want my audience to stop
for a moment and just enjoy looking at something beautiful.
Glass is an ideal vehicle for me. It’s man-made from
organic material; it’s fragile but strong; it’s precious but
familiar.”
