The Camel Farm

The Camel farm is a working farm specializing in the breeding of Arabian (one-humped) camels and other exotic and unusual animals and birds. The farm is open to visitors and for group tours from October to the end of May.

Camel Facts:
- One-humped camels are known as dromedaries or Arabian camels, and originate from Central Asia.
- Two-humped camels are known as Bactrian camels, and originate from central Asia.
- Camels store fat in their humps, which helps them survive when food is scarce.
- Camels do not store water anywhere in their bodies. They are capable of going several days without water during hot periods and weeks at a time during cool weather when eating green plants.
- Camels are able to lose as much as 40% of their body water without ill effect (most animals and humans are near death after losing 10-12% of their body water).
- Flat feet help camels travel across loose sand.
- Long eyelashes protect eyes from blowing sand.
- One-humped camels do not spit their cud when annoyed - two-humped camels and llamas (S. American camelids) do.
- Baby camels are born with no hump.

Exotic Animals and Birds: Besides a large herd of Arabian Camels, visitors can see a variety of animals and birds including, Arabian Wild Cats, an Ostrich, an Emu, Sicilian Miniature Donkeys, a Llama, Watusi Cattle, Fallow Deer, Four-Horned Sheep, Barbados Sheep, Go-bex, Patagonian Cavys, an African Spurred Tortoise, Golden Pheasants, Ring-necked Pheasants, Chinese Pheasant, Texas A&M (white) Pharoah Quail, Turkens (Transylvanian naked Necks), a Zeedonk, Bobwhite Quail, Silkie Chickens, English Bantams, Mandarin Ducks, Arabian Horses, Coati Mundis and many other animals. 


The camels are also available for parades and special events. The Camel Farm also welcomes school groups, and special group tours. Please call for details or use the email form below.

Hours: The Farm is open to the public from Oct.1st to May 31st. Hours are 9am-5pm, Monday - Saturday, closed Sunday.
Admission: $3 per person, $2.50 per person for seniors, and no charge for children 3 years old or younger.

Directions: From Interstate 8, exit on Avenue 3E. Go South (right hand turn if you are coming from the West - left hand turn if coming form the East), passing 32nd Street, MCAS (Marine Corps Air Station), and continue on Ave. 3E until reaching County 16. Turn right (west) onto County 16 and go two miles to Avenue 1E. Turn right (north) onto Ave. 1E. Entrance to the Farm is on the left.
